we have redone the reviews for the first THIRD WORLD WAR lp, the original reviews are on page 4 of the 70s invasion
THIRD WORLD WAR wrote the book on 70s pre-punk with their 2 lps that blew away any competition at the time, except for maybe the STOOGES allthough one could say they were the uk equavalent, then again listening to their music these days one figures they were even more underground than IGGY POP and co........their 2 lps in released in ' 70 are a powerhouse combo of rock musically reflecting the sounds of the STOOGES, HENDRIX, and the MC5, with even more politically detailed lyrics than MC5 or any band that had come before them, THIRD WORLD WAR were anti-government, they were anti establishment, they sang and preached about anarchy yrs before the PISTOLS and the CLASH picked up guitars, the songs written by leaders TERRY STAMP, and JIM AVERY are heartfelt and genuine, no-nonsense working class uk rock, they sang about and for the poor, the ugly , thats because they were poor working class yobs themselves and genuinely talented musicians, allthough their approach to music could be considered more an attack, whereas HENDRIX 'raped' the guitar to pull out the musical notes, STAMP and AVERY bulldozed their sound straight thru your brains and hammered what was left of your consciousness into pieces, leaving the listener's brain's strung out on the battlefield wondering when the next machine gun attack would take place, yea they were that GREAT, a sort of beautiful ugliness that rock spewed forth, that resulted in 2 masterpieces of heavy rock unparalled to this day, Note JOHNNY ROTTEN would assault the PISTOLS audiences with the music of THIRD WORLD WAR before the PISTOLS began their sets..............onto our revised reviews,.............we originally reviewed THIRD WORLD WAR back in ' 99, and in the spring of ' 04 we decided to do an in depth song-by-song review with selected lyrics, u can also see our reviews of 70s( RAZAR, 'FATSTICKS', etc, and new music by the brothers on the bottom links to page 21 of the 70s invasion ..............onto our reviews....

1 'ASCENSION DAY'
' WAITING ON A SIGNAL, COMIN' DOWN THE LINE, LOAD YOUR MAGAZINE CLIP, I'LL LOAD MINE'..............straight from the gutter these lyrics, for those of u uninformed about the politics of war, a magazine clip is what goes into yer machine gun...........' WAITING ON THE ROOFTOPS LOOKIN' FOR A SIGN, PULL YOUR HAND GRENADE PIN, I'LL PULL MINE', STAMP and AVERY were singing about street fighting much more so that the STONES were, in fact the day they recorded this number JIMMY PAGE was passing thru the studio and he freaked when he heard the lyrics to 'ascension day'.............'AND DON' T U KNOW I FEEL PROUD, JUST TO SHAKE YOUR HAND, AND DON' T U KNOW I FEEL PROUD JUST TO SHAKE YOUR HAND ON ASCENSION DAY, WHEN WE RISE !..........NOW WHEN WE RISE POWER TO THE PEOPLE, WHEN WE RISE POWER TO US ALL ' !........on and on goes this number, and these are just the lyrics, on a musical level the band finds a groove and follows it thru with this 'chopper' guitar sound utterly unique in rock at the time, the band pounds this number down so hard it leaves a ringing in your ears, and towards the end a sense of deja vu overcomes the listener.........one JESSE HECTOR of the HAMMERSMITH GORILLAS would go on record to say how much he loved this number, in fact he loved the band so much he named his band after the last cut on their 2nd lp........the complete lyrics to this opening cut have been at the bottom of the homnepage of the 70s invasion for yrs now........
2 ' M.I.5's ALIVE '
the next cut is a bouncy 3-D rock number, that goes on for several minutes with HENDRIX inspired guitar, the band jams as was the fashion of the day, but with lyrics like these they were assured 'underground' status with no possibility of commercial acceptance, we love 'em for it !.....' THEY SAID WESTMINSTER DOESN' T REJIOCE, HEARING AN HONEST POOR MAN's VIOCE, CALLING OUT IMPURITY, IS A BREACH OF THE PEACE OF NATIONAL SECURITY'...........and...........' LET's FREE THE WORKING CLASS, WERE TIRED OF LICKING THE GOVERNMENT's ARSE, LET's FREE THE WORKING CLASS WERE TIRED OF KISSING THE MONARCHY's ASS'..........one can see a clear influence the band had on the CLASH, in fact yrs later JOE STRUMMER walked up and shook STAMP's hand congratulating him......
3 ' TEDDY TEETH GOES SAILING'
ok every number cannot be complete assault of the senses, so next they decided to do a refined acoustic cut proper to toast a pint of guiness, a bottle of nightrain or some shit like pabst blue ribbon depending on how much money u have in yer pocket on any given nite.......' THERE' s PEOPLE HUNGRY HERE, AND THERE's PEOPLE HUNGRY THERE, COME TO THINK OF IT U COULD SAY, THERE's PEOPLE HUNGRY EVERYWHERE, THERE's PEOPLE OUT OF WORK HERE, AND THERE's PEOPLE OUT OF WORK THERE, COME TO THINK OF IT U COULD SAY, THERE's PEOPLE OUT OF WORK EVERYWHERE, AND THERE COULD BE A RIOT HERE, THERE COULD BE A RIOT THERE, VERY SOON U KNOW THERE COULD BE A RIOT EVERYWHERE,...........AND TEDDY TEETH GOES SAILING, GOES SAILING, GOES SAILING, GOES SAILING, GOES SAILING, HE's FAILING,HE's FAILING,HE's FAILING, FAILING, FAILING'.............yea those are the complete lyrics, this one is a band effort as much as any other cut allthough they are in a rather relaxed state of mind for what comes next, with lyrics like these they were calling for riots and street fighting in a way that could easily get a band banned from radio airplay, anyways the band were lookin' to make time capsules, not to entertain the rock royalty.........
4 ' WORKING CLASS MAN '
really LOVE this number, it's a defining moment of the lp, honest, and full of ugliness the counterculture faced in the day when this lp was recorded, sept - nov ' 70.....TERRY's vioce at times takes on a growl, and the band backs him up every step of the way........... 5 'SHEPHERD's BUSH COWBOY'
side 2 leads off with a song about the uhh soical-political atmosphere of the u.k. neighborhood of SHEPHERDS BUSH............begins with a good-time rock sound and ascends into HEAVY rock, honest and defining...........good backup vocals from the band here,...........here's an excert of the lyrics ; ' WHILE LEANING UP A WALL COUNTING MY MONEY, UP CAME ROSE A STREET WALKING BUNNY WOBBLING HER TAIL LOOKIN' FOR A SALE, IT WAS CASH ON THE NAIL MY BELLY STARTED THUMPING, SHE SAID MY HUNDER BILLS WAS MEALS WITH 2 WEEKS GOOD JUMPING............( later )..........I HEARD THE LANDLORD SHOUT UP FROM THE FLOOR BELOW HEY ROSE U BETTER GO SOME BABE, THERE's 6 MONTHS RENT U OWE.................( much later )..........POLICE CAME IN WITH DOGS AND TEAR GAS, EVERYONE WAS CRYING, WELL WE WON AND WE LOST, I PUT UP SOME FIGHTS, MY POOR ARSE WAS SUFFERING FROM DOG BITES, THE SEARGENT IN COURT READ OUT HIS REPORT, HE TOLD HOW WE FOUGHT THE JUDGE SAID THIS WON' T DO, FOR VIOLENCE AND ASAULT COWBOY, IT's WORMWOOD SCRUBS FOR U.........OH, U SHEPHERDS BUSH COWBOY.......
6 'STARDOM ROAD pt. 1
much DIFFERENT from the scope of the lp, this song is a very, very slow folk number similiar to the music LOVE came up with on ''FOREVER CHANGES', complete with Spanish sounding Flamenco guitar notes played beautifully, alltyhough the guys say they had never heard LOVE's lp when they made their lps.........Note; this number was later covered by DANA GILLESPIE.......conjuring up an atmosphere of late nite ambience.......TERRY tells the story of the scene at the time , of the pressures of being out on the road, stardom road........' WELL I KICKED ON MY MULE TO PARADE ME, EVERYONE ELSE LAUGHED AND BETRAYED ME, SAID U AIN' T GOT THE LOOK, AND U AIN' T GOT THE SIZE, AND U AIN' T NO FAIRY WITH SWEET POOFY EYES..............towards the end sings Terry; 'AND U AIN 'T GOT THE CHORDS, AND YOU'RE LIVING IN BAYSWATER ON FLOORBOARDS, AND U WON 'T NO U WON' T, NO U WON' T TAKE THAT LOAD UP STARDOM ROAD, AND U WON' T , NO U WON' T, NO U WON' T, TAKE THAT LOAD UP STARDOM ROAD....

as it indicates this song is an extension of the preceding 'pt 1', as soon as the first pt ends with slowly played guitar notes, the whole band kicks into a rock heavy groove where they bulldoze thru the number playing as fast as they can all the while singing only these words ; 'U AIN' T GOT NO HIGHWAY CODE,U AIN' T GOT NO HIGHWAY CODE,U AIN' T GOT NO HIGHWAY CODE,....UP STARDOM ROAD....'
'GET OUT OF BED U DIRTY RED'
in a similiar old fashioned style of side 1's 'TEDDY TEETH'.........this number has a bit more conviction and better suited lyrics......' Some may remember the fear in the 70's of the high risk that WW III was on the verge of happening. Anyway, I remember it. Big fear. Pretty darn real too. So much going on within the government. But devotees all went out on HariNama (chanting in the streets), and I mean every temple participated. Many of the threats and fears of that war began to modify, to change, and even ended. Prabhupada said we put a stop to WWIII!! Maybe not forever, but for a very long period of time!
I was just listening to an MP3 Prabhupada lecture where someone asked him how to change the government. Prabhupada replied that you do not change the government – you change yourself – then the government will change. So IMHO the more we chant, the more we send out transcendental vibrations, the better off we are, and the better off the world is. The more we go out on HariNama, or share/distribute `his' books, his message, then the more peace and spiritual energy we spread throughout the entire world. AND to donate to Prabhupada's movement, to a cause very much in need now, is great preaching. It benefits both those we feed and our soul as well! ~
